Sustainable development allows meeting the needs of present generations without compromising the survival of future generations.
In 2015, the United Nations (UN) established the 2030 Agenda, with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by this period. With a 15-year term, the agenda is an agenda for the current generation, but education for sustainable development goes beyond that.
Education for Sustainable Development assumes responsibility for generating relevant knowledge, professional skills, social attitudes and innovations necessary for a sustainable future. UP graduates must be competent professionals and citizens to lead transformative changes in their fields and committed to present and future generations at the local, regional, national and international level.
Universidade Positivo aims to be recognized for excellence in training for sustainable development, innovative and differentiated in teaching, research and extension , with a high level of student satisfaction and impact on the internal and external community.
Therefore, graduates must have the ability to lead their professional field to solve the challenges posed by a sustainable society. To do this, the student needs to develop the following skills and attitudes:
⇒ Autonomy: Ability to make decisions and take responsibility for one’s actions with intellectual independence.
⇒ Cooperation: Attitude of working together, in a coordinated manner, aiming for a common purpose and generating benefits for the parties involved in the process.
⇒ Creativity: Ability to create something new or propose solutions in search of innovation.
⇒ Epistemological curiosity: Attitude of actively exploring circumstances and having a constant desire to learn.
⇒ Empathy: Attitude of putting yourself in someone else’s shoes and thinking about problem solutions with the participation of agents directly affected, seeking a real perspective from those who experience it, giving a voice to the community involved.
⇒ Ethics: Attitude of acting in accordance with the values of a sustainable society.
⇒ Resilience: Attitude of giving new meaning to a process experienced by reducing its negative impacts and learning from the experience, adapting positively in the face of relevant adversities.
⇒ Responsibility: Attitude of proactively taking a leading role in solving society’s problems.
⇒ Responsiveness: Attitude of responding quickly and effectively to pertinent situations.
⇒ Vision or critical thinking: Ability to recognize and deal with a plurality of ways of thinking, being able to evaluate situations and synthesize divergent points of view.
⇒ Systems vision or thinking: Ability to recognize connections in complex systems with a view of the whole, the parts and their interactions, considering the direct and indirect effects of actions and decisions in the different spheres involved.
These competencies were defined based on a reflection on the role of the institution in its local context and its contribution to local development. The institution understands that its legacy is the training of society’s transformative agents for the challenges of sustainable development, and seeks to do so in a different and innovative way.
The Institutional Development Plan (PDI) establishes its operational objectives and the strategies to achieve them. The 2022 Sustainable Development Goals Report demonstrates the carrying out of activities in their various forms, throughout 2022. The 2022 Extension Report demonstrates the extension activities carried out in the same year.
By focusing its mission on promoting education for sustainable development, UP is effectively committed to promoting social, economic and environmental transformation in the context in which it operates, through coordinated actions in teaching, research and extension.
Extension programs are intended to serve target populations, in a dialogical relationship with society. Without seeking assistance, it works through projects with a social impact of transformation for the community served. In this way, in addition to providing the development of student skills related to responsibility, ethics, responsiveness and empathy, it demonstrates forms of transformative intervention in society in order to promote economic and social development in conjunction with teaching and research.
The extension promotes student leadership in social responsibility actions and contributes to the economic, social, environmental and cultural development of local and regional communities, in addition to promoting social inclusion and the defense of Human Rights.
As for research, during graduation, course completion work and projects are developed in the Scientific Initiation Program (PIC), in addition to research and projects carried out within the scope of master’s and doctoral programs, listed below:

In addition to this, it seeks to incorporate, into its training process, teaching, research and extension projects that contribute to improving the population’s living conditions, combined with other sustainable development objectives. Services are provided at health clinics, extension projects to improve the income of specific communities, as well as research into the living conditions of these individuals.

It is also worth noting that the UP lake is a space for rainwater drainage and helps to minimize flooding around the campus.
Environmental responsibility is institutionalized with the Environmental Management System (SGA). Recognizing its responsibility in the face of environmental problems, UP, through the SGA, organizes a conscious consumption policy, which provides employees, students, teachers and the community with information of social and environmental relevance.
Implemented since 2012, the SGA guarantees the monitoring of natural resources and correct waste management, in addition to raising awareness among employees, suppliers and service providers about actions that positively impact the environment. The consistency of the EMS led UP to obtain ISO 14.001 certification, the international standard among the most widespread and respected that establishes the requirements for the operation of a consistent Environmental Management System (EMS). UP was the first university in Paraná to achieve ISO 14.001 certification.
The implementation of ISO 14.001 depends on the existence of an organizational culture focused on sustainability, which involves both the adaptation of infrastructure and internal processes, as well as the environmental education of all actors in the institution, that is, managers, employees, teachers and students. Thus, one of the tripods of the EMS is environmental education, through institutional actions such as newsletters, blogs, signage and projects, as well as the implementation of the theme in the educational process in a transversal and multidisciplinary way, in different course disciplines, practices in classroom and research and extension projects in the environment and sustainability.

The library’s collection is available to the external community for local consultation, as well as the use of its spaces for studies.
The UP Library takes advantage of the space for research, discovery and provision of knowledge to reveal art and culture to its visitors. It is believed that this practice can deepen the experience of novelty and cultural convergence beyond the traditional media of books and periodicals: the diverse artistic expressions broaden the horizons of those who walk through its corridors. Therefore, every two months the Library offers an exhibition of thematic exhibitions based on collections from students, teachers, collaborators and external guests in the form of oil paintings, sculptures, engravings and others.
